《參考消息》對美國媒體中中國南海稱呼的改動也很典型。南海命名涉及到主權(quán)問題，具有明確的意識形態(tài)意義。比如菲律賓政府2012年9月12日宣布將包括中國南海部分水域在內(nèi)的菲律賓群島以西海域命名“西菲律賓海”之后，中國臺灣和中國大陸次日都分別表示強烈反對和拒絕承認。中國外交部2012年9月13日在例行記者會上明確指出南海一直是國際社會公認的地名。
